Spring into Summer

vibrant cosmos flowers under clear blue sky

Hi All! Here we are going into the 14th week of the year 2026. Palm Sunday, already. Easter Sunday next week. Colored eggs, and Easter baskets. A new bonnet or outfit, anyone? I should send a card to family far away…

It seems like the years, and months, and even days are rushing past at an epic pace – they say that happens as we get older; when each moment is proportionately less of our lifetime so it feels shorter.

Hmph. I take it as a reminder of how precious each day is, especially the ‘normal’ days where nothing exceptional happens in the house or family. Finally, a chance to breathe and maybe sneak in a spa-at-home day.

But the luxurious weather of spring can easily lull me into a sleep. Not too hot, not too cold and the garden is watered into a lush and verdant green. Ten cubic yards of aged mushroom compost (aka: steer manure) from the local rock yard didn’t hurt either. Everything is growing like gangbusters. The flowers have gone wild, tossing their glorious scent into every corner. Yay for spring flowers!

The dog shakes her head. And again. Foxtail season has arrived. A lot of that lovely green has sprouted nasty barbed foxtail weed that burrows into an animal’s fur, then into their flesh if it is not found in time. That means expensive trips to the vet’s office… sigh. I guess it’s time to go out there and get the weeds out of the garden. Makes life easier in the long run.

Weeding opens a lot of room in the beds, and I think of planting veggies in the bare bits of rich soil. Anything except the token flowering kale. Who eats that? Now is the perfect time to plant in your summer vegetables. If you were clever enough to set seed indoors on Groundhog’s Day (Feb. 2), your seedlings will be good to go. I will likely run off to the garden center to buy a few tomato seedlings soon.

Opening the windows again after winter left the rooms all musty — to let in that lovely spring air and you see where spiders have set up shop. And where the window sills need attention. These are items for the spring cleaning list, recalling to mind watching grandma scrub the sills and touch-up the paint on sunny windows about this time each year.

Father Time taps his foot. Traditionally, the spring cleaning should all be done by May 1. Well, I guess it wouldn’t be spring after that. Summer sun is coming and with it melting heat. (Some people love it, but I melt like butter in the sun.) So clearing up that attic space and other house maintenance is another great thing to tick off the TA DA list before the thermometer climbs. Let’s add a trip to the hardware store to the shopping list.

All this maintenance and planning for days ahead hints at spending money on something or other. Better make sure we plan the family trip, or at least set the time aside now and see what the budget will bear. This summer will be here before we have a chance to catch our breath again. And none of us are getting any younger. But who knows, maybe a camping trip with the grandkids is a possibility? That sounds priceless to me.

Oh my, it seems my perfect spring days have become rather busy after all, with no sign of slowing any time soon. So much to accomplish between now and the future, because Father Time is not impatient, he just never stops tapping that foot.

Happy Spring – while it’s here!

How do you reset your household schedule and budget this time of year?

P.S. Thank Yous to my dear friend, Rita who help me with this note today. You always remind me of the important things!
